New York City has one of the largest urban pigeon populations in the country. Exact counts change constantly, but the reason pigeons feel so common is simple: city buildings, ledges, bridges, storefront signs, rooflines, trash areas, and transit corridors give pigeons steady food, shelter, and nesting opportunities.

Pigeon control and bird pressure on New York City buildings
Pigeons thrive around NYC buildings when ledges, vents, rooflines, and exterior openings offer regular shelter.

Why Pigeons Thrive in NYC

Pigeons adapt well to dense neighborhoods because they can nest on small protected surfaces and return to the same areas again and again. In a city environment, even a narrow ledge, roof edge, sign band, air-conditioning opening, or vent cover can become a repeat roosting spot.

Ledges & Rooflines

Cornices, parapets, beams, roof edges, and signs give pigeons protected places to perch and nest.

Food Sources

Trash areas, outdoor dining, sidewalks, and public spaces can keep pigeon activity concentrated around buildings.

Repeat Nesting

When a site stays open, pigeons may return season after season, especially around sheltered exterior openings.

What Pigeon Activity Means for Buildings

For homeowners, co-ops, apartment buildings, storefronts, restaurants, and commercial properties, pigeon pressure is usually less about the total number of pigeons in the city and more about where they are landing, nesting, and leaving droppings.

  • Droppings on sidewalks, entrances, signs, fire escapes, roof edges, and outdoor seating areas.
  • Nesting material around vents, ledges, HVAC openings, gutters, and exterior covers.
  • Recurring bird pressure where exclusion, netting, screening, or ledge deterrents may be needed.
  • Cleanup or prevention concerns around areas where birds return repeatedly.

If pigeons are creating a problem on your property, the next step is usually an inspection of the roosting or nesting area, followed by a practical prevention plan. Learn more about our pigeon control services in New York.

We had an issue with bats in our attic which have caused us a lot of stress and anxiety. Frank came at 11 pm and found the bat that had made it into our living area and came back to do a roof inspection which determined we needed bat eviction process and sealing up the roof. Frank and team were great through the whole process keeping us at ease the whole time during such a unsettling situation. You need a true professional when dealing with a serious situation and Frank and team are the best.

Animal control does not have to be without compassion. I was so grateful for Frank's compassion. I feel so lucky he returned my calls when nobody else would. He was so conscientious before even accepting the job. We had pigeons falling into and getting trapped in the top of a rolling gate, due a gap and a dent in the gate; caused by both a poor design and some damage. He took care of the current trapped pigeon then quickly and ingeniously came up with a solution. Best call I ever made.
